Within a few centuries, it will be technically feasible to eradicate all forms of suffering from the living
world. If we wish to do so, then genetic engineering and nanotechnology could be used to abolish the
biological substrates of cruelty altogether. In its place, gradients of genetically preprogrammed well-being
may animate us instead. Millennia hence, it is even possible to predict that the world's last aversive
experience will be a precisely dateable event: perhaps a (to us) minor pain in an obscure marine invertebrate.
It's technically possible. Should we do it?
